A Day in the Life: Social Care Worker at Attuned Healthcare

Ever wondered what a day in social care really looks like? We spent a day with one of our Attuned Healthcare social care workers to see the care, connection and small moments that make a big difference to the people we support.
9:00am, handover and settling in I arrive, drop my bag, clip on my lanyard and get the rundown from whoever was on before me. How everyone slept, anything I need to know for the day. A good handover sets the tone for the whole shift.
10:00am, breakfast and the morning routine Kettle on, breakfast made, kitchen buzzing. It's a small routine, but it matters. Everyone has their own pace in the mornings, and part of the job is reading the room and getting the balance right between helping and just being there.
11:00am, tidying and the practical stuff Between breakfast and whatever's next, there's always a bit of tidying up, straightening cushions, getting the house looking and feeling comfortable. And underneath all of it, the constant, quiet routines like hand hygiene before meals and after activities. Not glamorous, but it's what keeps everyone safe, and it becomes second nature pretty fast.
12:30pm, out in the garden One of my favourite parts of the day. We've got a greenhouse on site, and there's something genuinely calming about pottering around the plants with residents, checking what's growing, having a chat, getting a bit of fresh air. It doesn't feel like work in that moment, and that's kind of the point.
2:00pm, the unpredictable bit This is the part you can't fully plan for. Someone might need a bit more support than expected, or the day just takes a different shape than you thought. It's where patience and actually knowing the people you support come together.
4:00pm, wind down time Later in the afternoon things slow down. A comfy chair by the window, a bit of quiet, maybe some company or just space if that's what's needed. It's unhurried, and it matters just as much as the busier parts of the day.
6:00pm, dinner and planning ahead Dinner together, and usually a bit of planning for the week too. The meal board gets updated so whoever's on shift next has a smoother run of it. There's something satisfying about leaving things a little easier for the next person.
8:30pm, wrapping up, together The last jobs of the day are usually a team effort, moving furniture back into place, having a laugh with a colleague while you do it. The people I work alongside make a genuinely hard job feel a lot lighter.
9:00pm, handover and home Notes written up, a proper handover for the next shift, then home. Tired, but rarely without the feeling that today mattered.
Why I do this workNo two days look exactly the same, but the thread running through all of it is the same: showing up, being present, and helping people feel safe, comfortable and at home. At Attuned Healthcare, that's what social care work actually looks like.
